A Beginner’s Guide to Kitchen Island Design

By Cut

When you decide to undertake a kitchen remodel, you might not know how difficult a job this project is. Depending on how many changes you want to make, it can take months to get this room back in working order! You need to decide what type of oven and stovetop combination, how large and how sophisticated the new refrigerator should be, and what type of tile you would like for the floor. One option you are still trying to figure out is whether you are interested in adding a kitchen island or work table. No more wavering, because you definitely need one!

Every kitchen island, however, is unique. That is both an advantage and a disadvantage. You are able to create the perfect kitchen addition that has the features that you need, but that can be the hardest part! If you feel that you have no idea about kitchen island design, do not fret. Here is a quick guide to help you get started!

1) The first decision is what materials you want to use for your new island. Traditionally, the base is made from a varnished hardwood, such as birch, oak, maple, or mahogany. If you have already chosen the material for the cabinets and other woodwork for the kitchen, you might want to try to match that with your kitchen island so that the kitchen looks uniform. The countertop can either match the countertop you have chosen for the rest of the room or you can use a complementary material. If you could not afford marble for the whole room, try it just for your island. This warm stone will look great and is an easy-to-clean surface!

2) Decide on the features that you need. With all your fancy new appliances, do you have any counter space? Would you like a casual dining space? These islands are also perfect for extra storage space as well. This reason is why so many islands are custom made; every kitchen has different needs and the kitchen island is the perfect solution! Do you need a second kitchen sink? What about an extra cooking range? Check out some kitchen island pictures online to get a better idea of the different options other people picked.

Good luck deciding on your new kitchen island design!
