Can I use a Ultra 320 SCSI Card for a Ultra 160 SCSI Device?

By Cut

Hello all – I have a Sony AIT5 tape drive (Ultra 160) and we just bout a new Dell Poweredge 2900. I need to get a SCSI card and I’m having trouble finding a PCIx Ultra 160 card. Is the U160 backwards compatible? I’m look at the adaptec 29320LPE.

ultra 320 will run ultra 160 devices.

ultra320 scsi is backwards compatible and will support ultra160 devices. however, here’s a couple of caveats… 1.) if at all possible, stay away from raid scsi cards. these types of cards are designed to be used with disk drives, not tape drives. in fact, you can experience i/o errors, poor performance, and data corruption. if you have a raid-capable card, make sure you disable the raid function. 2.) do not daisy-chain any disk devices on the same bus with your tape drive.
