Tutukaka harbour on the East Coast of Northland, New Zealand had a tidal surge that almost sunk boats. Fortunately it was a lowish tide at the time. Not sure of the height but a very strong surge.. Ocean currents around New Zealand also strong.

Thankfully not, as I live just by the beach in Wellington, and they didn't even warn me that a tsunami had struck Samoa, and was expected to hit here at 10.50am local time. I found out on the 6pm news, and I go to the beach every day regardless of weather.

I live on the south coast of NZ which, of course, is closer to Samoa than Cali. We were forewarned of a possible tsunami, but the highest it got on New Zealand's coast was about 20 cm. That was on the north facing coast of the North Island. So, nope, we in NZ got away Scot free, apart from NZ tourists in Samoa who got drowned.

As a Kiwi living in Japan, we experienced 10-50cm waves yesterday from the Pacific region and we are also experiencing earthquakes here. Two months ago, we had a 6- earthquake and I live near the coast where there is a nuclear power station and many people are sh----g themselves because of the increase in earthquake activity. But the one we had was because of the undersea plates where the lower plate had too much pressure that it suddenly "bounced" back cvausing a voilent jolt. I know one of the tourist's killed in the Samoa tsunami.
Her name is Mrs White from Raglan, I use to go to Raglan Area School.

No

"The Coast Guard in Southern California reports no noticeable surges or waves related to a tsunami advisory following a magnitude-8 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa."
