Do people still use opera glasses?

By Cut

I am going to New York’s Metropolitan Opera for the first time and I want to know if I should expect people to be using traditional opera glasses. I know the Met offers binoculars to patrons, but I’m interested in bringing my own glasses if others do as well. Since I’ve never seen an opera at the Met before, I’d like firsthand advice– preferably from someone who has been to the Met– if it is common for others to bring their own glasses. Thanks!

Absolutely. People will be using traditional opera glasses and more conventional binoculars, especially if one is sitting in the Family Circle. The interesting thing about the Met, is that the higher you go the better the sound. The obvious problem, of course, is being able to see the stage. I bring my opera-glasses, purchased at the Met Gift Shop to every performance I see there.

By all means bring your own! You will not be out of place at all.

I’ve never been to the Met, of course, but have performed in 3 operas for our Opera Company here in San Jose,CA.

I bring mine! We go tp the MEt several times a year, and even when we are sitting closer, I like to sometimes see details. However, watching a long time thru opera glasses gives me a headache!

You know – you can watch many Met operas over streaming video, for a reasonable fee. Hook them up to your flat screen – wow! Many movie theaters also show these SAME productions. Go to the metopera website and check this out.
