Hamper McBee – moonshiner, Monteagle TN
By
I spent a month one week with Hamper as my roommate at the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville. Hamper was a famous moonshiner – made damn good whiskey – slap yer ass in the creek! This is Hamper singing a bit and talkin about moonshining – Citicoron

BTW – I do have a copy of the LP Raw Mash. I haven’t listened to it in a very long time. I guess I’m due to get it out and revisit this very cool album.

I interned with Blaine in the spring of 79. I was sent to pick up Hampher one weekend to bring him back up to Murfreesboro to shoot some ins/outs. We shot with Hamper standing in the middle of Cripple Creek. I took him back to Monteagle at the end of the day and was supposed to pick him back up Sunday morning and bring him back up to shoot more. But I was never able to find him that Sunday morning and I drove all over Monteagle looking for him but it was the morning after Sat night

RAW MASH and MOUTH MUSIC (a GA PBS show hosted by Hamper) may be re-leased by the Tenn Folklore Society. RAW MASH was a video done by Sol Korine and Blaine Dunlap in 1978. Sol and I accidently and unexpectedly were the main speakers for the National Conference of Teachers of English (College Eng Dept profs). A wonderful great and funny tale (now…30 years later) Not enough space to elaborate, however, we were never invited back!

Hamper was my Uncle too. He was quiet a character, and missed by many.

The hole interview is from his LP Raw Mash. Hamper made two LP’s and one video’s. One was called CUMBERLAND MOONSHINER the other was RAW MASH. The best one is Raw Mash, it is just him singing with no accomplishment. They are very hard to find but are worth the effort.

I loved that, you can tell he’s been there. Just like listenin to the old timers tell their stories. You mind if I finish that song out?
