How do I not scare myself when going on a chair lift?

By Cut

When I am on a chair lift going up a mountain I doubt my skills of snowboard, and begin to contemplate getting stuck or falling harshly. But in reality once I get to the top I easily make it down. How can I convince myself that I can easily take on the slope? Thanks!

Enjoy the view. Mother nature and the snow bunnies should keep you occupied till you get to the top.

When I started boarding, I used to think that way too. But then I realized that it was my inhibition and my fear that kept me from tearing it up, and I began to loosen up and I became better and more competent. You’re not going to get hurt, it’s rare that people get seriously hurt out there. The only time I’ve ever gotten hurt was in the parking lot while walking back to my car. It’s just dirt with snow on it, you’re not afraid of the ice cubes in your freezer are you? Show it who’s boss and know that you can handle it.

Think of deep powder as a big soft fluffy pillow. If it makes you feel better when I went to leadville last time my nose stuck in the snow when i got off the lift and i flipped into a steel bar that shut off the lift but it was surrounded by powder and it was soft but that was embarrassing.

the best thing to do is to talk to someone, try to keep you mind of it for most of the ride up.i would always worry about crashing on the chairlift but after not crashing a few times, i learned to be calm and what ever happens, happens. just have confidence in yourself and have a good time, crash or no crash.

bring an ipod listen to music on the way up and on the way done. i cant ride without music it just messes up my entire flow

Well my advice would be that when you are on the chairlift you remove your glove and reach into your pants and verify that you indeed still have balls. When grasping said balls realize that you are a man and that little 15 year old girls are in the snowboard park getting bigger air then you, and that if the idea of making it down the mountain alive scares you maybe you should try something a little safer i.e. basket weaving, croquet, cricket, or just about anything else the French do on a daily basis you pansy!

Sometimes I get so nervous on the chairlifts, I have a hard time peeing over the side. It’s even worse if I’m sitting in the middle and I don’t know the other people on the lift. I get stage fright and can’t start my stream good and get some on my mittens. I find yodeling helps relax me and any European skiers within earshot as well.
