If I filled my floor cushions with rice would that attract bugs, mold, etc?

By Cut

I want to find a cheap, clean filler for my floor cushions that won’t attract insects or mold. Thanks.

Rice can become damp from the air in our homes. The sewing dept. in many stores sell fiber in large boxes. If you pull it apart by the handfuls, it makes great stuffing for pillows of all kinds and will not matte down when they are washed or fluffed in the drier.

I have filled several door blockers (to keep the cold out) with rice and have not noticed any bugs at all. I would think as long as they are sealed all the way around the cushions would be fine. I got my rice at Sams in the 25# bags.
You might try Lowes and Home Depot to see if sand is any cheaper than the rice, because sand would work too,

Any kind of food product will eventually attract critters, including mice.

Grain products naturally have weevils and worms and when the conditions are right, they will hatch. It may take a few years, but it will happen ~ I volunteer in a food bank, trust me on this one :)

Beans would be a better alternative except, they aren’t cheap. At 50¢ a pound, you’d be looking at $25 of fill just for a basic 2 x 2 foot pillow. And what happens if someone spills a drink on it? You’d be eating bean spouts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner clear into the next decade.

Sand would work except for one thing ~ the weight. Many of the floor pillows I’ve seen would need at least 3 to 4 bags of sand. Do you really want pillows that weigh between 75 and 100 pounds?

If you really want to save money ~ hit the thrifts and buy old feather pillows for a buck each. The feathers can be dry cleaned and fluffed at any dry cleaners and are ideal for filling floor pillows.

Well if it gets humid will expand, and an available food for rodents, yes think would attract them
